General Assembly

The General Assembly Format of Model United Nations focused on large-scale debate, generally consisting of of more than twenty countries represented. GA's, as they're frequently called, are usually based around either a session of the UN General Assembly or UN Security Council, during which a topic is discussed the entire time. (UC Model UN)

Key Points of GA's:

  • Increase in Participants

Usually more delegates in a committee room

  • Delegation Assignments

The delegates usually represent a country rather than an individual person.

  • Speaking Norms

Anytime a delegate speaks they must use "The delegation of US" or "The United States" etc. to talk about themselves.

  • Personal Pronouns

Never use I, He, She (personal pronouns) to refer to yourself or other delegates in the room

  • Topic Solutions

Solutions to topics are made by things called "resolutions"

  • Resolution Formatting

Resolutions have specific formats that you can find on this website.

GA Tips:

  • Ability to handle power delegates(or bossy ones)

  • Reading off of your opening speech

  • Afraid to speak/raise your placard

  • Use your hands and eye contact during speeches

  • Kiss up to your chair! (shoot them an email or ask for advice before commitee)

  • Remember to have FUN!!

Dealing with Power Delegates:

Scenario:

If a delegate seems to keep talking on and on and won’t let anyone else talk

Power delegates can be scary and most of the time there will be a power delegate that tries to intimidate you.

So, here are a few solutions you can utilize when this happens!

*Note: most of the time power delegates get best delegate awards*

Solution #1

Solution: Ask a question towards the beginning of their spiel that is DIRECTED TOWARDS them. They will definitely pause and try to answer the question, because they would want to seem more knowledgeable about the topic overall (and they know it). They will turn DIRECTLY towards you and answer the question. Make sure to keep eye contact and ask more questions if needed. Once you find a nook to insert your idea and find a way to correlate it with the delegate’s ideas you become one of the leaders!

Solution #2

Simply tell the power delegate: “I don’t mean to infringe on your national sovereignty “Country name”, but I believe I heard some good ideas from “Other quieter country” and it may help us with the issue of “Topic”

This way the “power delegate” shuts up and the quieter country will think of you as their god

Once the quieter country is finished seize the opportunity to insert in your country’s ideas and ask some other countries to express their ideas. Now you’re the LEADER!!
